Dear Healthy Homes Insulation,
I’m writing to thank you and your product for saving our house (and possibly our lives). On April 20th, 2009, a ceiling fan on our screen porch caused a fire that climbed the outside of the house and broke through the 1st, 2nd and attic levels of the home at approximately the same time. The family and I had gone to bed about an hour before this and our first indication of the fire was when it broke through the 2nd floor windows and engulfed the bedrooms.
While we were lucky enough to escape, once the fire department had the fire under control we had lost the entire back of the house and some of the roof to fire damage. In a walkthrough with the Fire Marshal after the fire, he was astounded that the entire structure (and possibly my family) was not consumed. During our walkthrough we discovered that the fire had traveled up the back of the house, ignited the eaves and had attempted to travel up the roof. If it had done so, there’s a good chance that none of us would have made it out alive.
The item that saved our house was the Icynene foam insulation installed by Healthy Home Insulation the previous summer to insulate the attic roof. While it had performed wonderfully in lowering our heating and cooling costs by ~33% over the past year, it also acted as a fire barrier and prevented the fire from traveling up the roof sheathing and down to the front of the house (where we escaped from).
Our house is currently being rebuilt and with any luck we’ll be back home shortly after Thanksgiving. We’ve been working with the re-construction firm and they’re well aware that we want Healthy Home Insulation to come back in and install the exact same insulation (Icynene LD-C 50). This is not only to keep the same level of cooling and heating benefits we’d observed, but also to let us sleep easier at night knowing that the foam might save our house (or lives) once again.
Sincerely,
Robert and Angela Hodges

F1 – Fire started at outside deck
F2 – Fire burn through soffit – foam insulation suppresses fire and does not allow flame to envelope roof
F3 – Foam insulation exposed to extreme heat from fire
F4 – Foam insulation keep roof from catching on fire
F5 – Icynene foam is a thermal set plastic – flame will consume plastic insulation, however, insulation will not melt or contribute fuel to the fire
